when she can laugh again
i’ll be sure she does
we’ll sigh a great sigh then
to go back to how it was
to not be in pain to do what you love
or have to be somewhere you’re sick of
on some avenue in a room
handed a fate you didn’t choose
but we’ll take it one day at a time
while i save up my rhymes
and she takes some time to unwind
to rest her pretty little mind
when she can laugh again
i’ll be sure she does
here or there or otherwise
she’ll roll her eyes
and no one will be surprised
a dinner home cooked
another chapter for the book
where we’ve all dreamed to look
we’ll take it one day at a time
while we save up our lines
and she takes some time to unwind
to rest her pretty little mind
i know she’ll laugh again
i know she’ll laugh again
i know she’ll laugh again
i know she’ll laugh again
we’ll take it one day at a time
while we save up our lines
and she takes some time to unwind
to rest her pretty little mind

anyone who likes poetry or music or social commentary or anything good should watch this. it’s stunning.
that whirring sound
that you forget about
as the lights go out
then not a sound
nowhere to be found
just here, right now
a warm feeling
you’re safe for now
the window open
the cold air so deceiving
you’re lying here hoping
that this is the best
and can’t be put to the test
with any standard or metric
on a load so electric
because fragile breaks
if it’s more for his sake
a disproportionate take
a gut feel
is sure to peel
away at your wonder
of what is or what could
happen under, i shudder
what i would, what i would
not what i should, what i should
but that was then
and we’re here now
so just forget about
your troubles
and let go again
come with me
i won’t steer you wrong
you’ve heard it all before
and a song’s just a song
but you’re looking
for all things wrong
it’s been far too long
I’m pushing pins through the pavement
I’m adding days to the week
I feel the city sidewalk shake beneath me
While everyone sleeps.
I’m spiking punch and Judy send offs
The silver dollars I stole
From Michael’s dresser somewhere
Back in Brooklyn
While he was out digging holes.
I wrote the horse you rode in on a letter
To keep the focus off me and make it stay there
To keep you guessing while the shift change
Splits the streets
But I still can’t sleep

This is the first live performance of a song I wrote called “I’ll Go On” at Cooper Union’s Sandy Benefit Show this past November. I’ve written songs collaboratively in bands before, but this song I consider to be the first song I’ve written start to finish. I plan on officially releasing this and a few more songs I’m working on this summer under the tentative name Grum Life, so stayed tuned!
There seems to be no one on the empty mountain …
And yet I think I hear a voice,
Where sunlight, entering a grove,
Shines back to me from the green moss.
-Wittter Bynner & Kiang Kang-hu, 1929
i don’t know why it is, but it is
it’s something i put up with
a problem unsolved that my mind can’t resolve
a daydream i can’t make sense of
enough’s enough
but something’s not right
because when tough was tough
you didn’t put up a fight
i took a pen and uncapped
and i drew me a map
ink bled so thoughtfully
on thoughts thought too cautiously
on a page i wouldn’t dare to waste
over a problem i can’t face
enough’s enough
but something’s not right
because when tough was tough
i didn’t put up a fight
you took a pen and uncapped
said you would write me back
but your pen’s dry spout
has me all strung out
from not knowing what about
my mind made up but so full of doubt
because enough’s enough
but something’s not right
because when tough was tough
you didn’t put up a fight
